For the past 20 years, The Helsingin Sanomat Foundation has funded communication research, quality journalism and journalist education. Now, we look 20 years ahead.
In our 20th anniversary grant call, we seek methods to strengthen journalism amid technological, economic, cultural, and geopolitical turmoil.
These methods may relate, for example, to strengthening the role or the profitability of journalism, improving children’s media literacy, or exploring opportunities offered by AI.
The 20th anniversary grant call is open to researchers, educational institutions, industry practitioners, and students alike. However, we do not fund core operations, but rather seek projects that help build the future of journalism or benefit the entire field. Such projects may, for instance, enable new breakthroughs or developmental leaps.
We request two types of applications:
- 1. Applications for research that would assist Finnish journalism or media in addressing technological, economic, cultural, or societal challenges. The application must include a research plan and curriculum vitae of the principal investigator.
- 2. Applications for the implementation of innovations or ideas that would assist Finnish journalism or media in addressing technological, economic, cultural, or societal challenges. The application must include a plan detailing how, when and by whom the idea would be implemented.
In the 20th anniversary grant call, the HS Foundation will distribute a maximum total of one million euros. The grant application process is single-stage. Applications may be completed in Finnish or in English.
Complete your application through the HS Foundation grant application portal at hssaatio.fi by November 14. Decisions regarding grant recipients will be made by December 3.
